Nearby Newstead Abbey is brilliant for weekend walks and family-friendly events and there are enough shops and eateries on the doorstep that you don’t have to venture far for day-to-day needs. With an excellent choice of schools, it’s an ideal spot to raise young kids – just expect them to moan that there’s ‘nothing to do’ once they hit their teens!</p>

Also home baked award-winning pies. In the village centre you&#8217;ll fine <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Bradburysofravenshead/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bradbury&#8217;s</a> butchers too, brilliant for hard-to-find ingredients and quality meats. For essentials and top-ups you&#8217;ll find a couple of convenience stores and a Sainsbury&#8217;s Local on your doorstep, along with a Post Office at Milton Court. <p>Let’s face it, you’re not moving here for the nightlife. But with Nottingham within shooting distance culture is far from cut-off. The amazing abbey is also a boon to have on your doorstep. For the past few years the woodlands at Newstead Abbey have been home to the disco-inspired <a href="https://newsteadabbey.org.uk/wonderland-festival" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wonderland Festival.</a> It is also home to the <a href="https://newsteadabbey.org.uk/whats-on" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Byron Family Fun Festival</a> and hosts open air theatre and al fresco films each summer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nearby-attractions">NEARBY ATTRACTIONS</h2>



<p><a href="https://papplewickpumpingstation.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Papplewick Pumping Station</a> is close by and is a rare Victorian beauty (so beautiful that it&#8217;s a popular choice for weddings). It hosts regular artisan markets and <a href="https://papplewickpumpingstation.org.uk/steam-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">events</a> such as the summer Steampunk weekend, classic car rallies and family fun days. Newstead Abbey (the former home of Romantic poet Lord Byron has gorgeous gardens. This <a href="https://www.alltrails.com/trail/england/nottinghamshire/newstead-abbey-gardens" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2.7km circula</a>r is a lovely lunch hour walk through the grounds (the incredible Japanese garden is a highlight). Or walk through the pines at beautiful <a href="https://www.forestryengland.uk/blidworth-woods" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blidworth Woods</a> where there are three <a href="https://www.forestryengland.uk/sites/default/files/documents/Blidworth%20Woods%20Equestrian%20Route%20AW_0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">waymarked trails</a> (the longest is 5km) for daily dog walks or runs.</p>

<p>A good time to snap up a bargain here? House prices have dropped in Ravenshead by 18 per cent over the last year, with the average property price coming in at £392,897.</p>

<p>Plenty of outdoor play and healthy food on offer at <a href="https://cherubsnurseries.co.uk/day-nurseries/cherubs-longdale/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cherubs Day Nursery</a>, which was rated Good in all areas by Ofsted in 2024.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schools">SCHOOLS</h2>



<p>The two local primary schools are <a href="https://www.ravensheadcofeprimary.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ravenshead C of E Primary School</a> (found to be Good in all areas in 2022) and <a href="https://www.abbeygatesprimaryschool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Abbey Gates Primary School</a>, which also received a Good in all areas rating in 2024. The closest secondary is <a href="https://www.josephwhitaker.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Joseph Whitaker School&nbsp;</a>in the neighbouring village of&nbsp;Rainworth. For Sixth Formers, <a href="https://www.wnc.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">West Notts College </a>in Mansfield isn&#8217;t far.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;re looking for independent schools <a href="https://www.salterfordhouseschool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Salterford House School</a> is a prep (ages 2 – 11 yrs) with small class sizes and a family feel. <a href="https://www.wellowhouse.notts.sch.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wellow House Schoo</a>l caters for kids from 3 – 16 yrs. For all-through education, look at Ranby House and <a href="https://www.wsnl.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Worksop College</a>. The excellent&nbsp;<a href="https://nottinghamgirlshigh.gdst.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nottingham Girls’ High School</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://nottinghamhigh.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nottingham High School</a>&nbsp;are both within reach too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret">BEST-KEPT SECRET</h2>



<p>Love a good ghost story? Newstead Abbey is full of them. The ‘Rose Lady’ is often spotted in a passageway at the bottom of a staircase, accompanied by a lingering scent of roses or lavender that remains after she disappears. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>Nottingham is 11 miles south, Mansfield is 5 miles to the north, with easy access to major roads like the M1 and the A60. The bus network is decent, but for trains you&#8217;ll need to head to Mansfield to pick up the Robin Hood line (Worksop to Nottingham).</p>
