<p>Brace yourself for the onslaught of visitors, all your friends will be clamouring to drop by if you set up home here. The three main villages nestled in the stunning Hope Valley – Edale, Castleton and Hathersage – may feel remote, but their location at the heart of the UK means easy access to urban spots such as Sheffield (20 minutes) and even Manchester (just over an hour).</p>



<p>With dramatic Stanage Edge and some of the best-loved Peak District walks on the doorstep, it’s catnip for climbers, hikers and cyclists. This valley punches above its weight for fab foodie haunts too. Pre-hike breakfast spots, post walk pitstops and cool cafés, the villages of the Hope Valley are home to them all.</p>

<p>Small in size, but big on eating out options. Foodies will get along just fine living in any of the Hope Valley villages. In Hathersage, <a href="https://www.scotsmanspackcountryinn.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Scotsman’s Pack pub</a> is a locals’ favourite and recently renovated <a href="https://thegeorgehathersage.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The George</a> (once frequented by Charlotte Brontë) is all old oak beams with contemporary styling and is fab for Sunday roasts and easy-going dinners. <a href="https://www.bankhousehathersage.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bank House</a> is all about fresh, seasonal, local food with a Mediterranean twist – great for nights out with friends (excellent cocktails too). <a href="https://riversidekitchen.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Riverside Kitchen at David Mellor</a> overlooks Michael Hopkins’s striking Round Building or spice it up at Indian restaurant <a href="https://maazi.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maazi</a>. Castleton is home to great little Italian <a href="http://www.1530therestaurant.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">1530</a> and <a href="https://bullsheadcastleton.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bull’s Head</a> for fab Sunday lunches. Venture 10 minutes south and you’ve got Michelin-listed, multi-award-winning (and Muddy Awards Best Gastropub) <a href="https://www.theblindbull.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Blind Bull.</a></p>



<p>For daytime eats, coffee aficionados should head to <a href="https://www.castletoncoffee.co.uk/">Castleton Coffee Co</a> or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.colemansdeli.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colemans Deli</a>&nbsp;(where the doorstep sandwiches are pretty good too).&nbsp;<a href="https://www.castletoncoffee.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hathersage Kitchen by Evangaline</a>&nbsp;is cool contemporary daytime hangout, with a gorgeous garden for al fresco lunches.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.openhousehathersage.com/daily-kitchen" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Open House Hathersage&nbsp;</a>dishes up nourishing, organic soul foods. In Edale, get a pre-hike weekend breakfast in at <a href="https://newfoldfarmedale.com/cafe-bar/">The Fold</a> or try popular <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pennypotcafe" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pennypot Café</a> for cakes. On the main road between Hathersage and Castleton, <a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/bike-boot-peak-district-derbyshire/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bike &amp; Boot</a> is great for easy-to-love family eats and informal dinners with pooch in tow.</p>

<p>Retail therapy probably isn’t the biggest draw for househunters looking to settle in the Hope Valley, but if outdoorsy kit is high on your list of priorities, you’re in luck. You’re in the heart of climbing country here, so outdoorsy types will be able to flex the credit card on every corner. Locals fave&nbsp;<a href="https://www.outside.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Outside&nbsp;</a>has been selling climbing clobber and outdoorsy kit here for 30 years (and even has a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.outside.co.uk/our-cafe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">café</a>&nbsp;to fuel up in first), British brand&nbsp;<a href="https://alpkit.com/pages/hathersage" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alpkit</a>&nbsp;is on the main road (offering extras like yoga sessions, boulder mat and bike hire and a repair station for fixing your outdoor kit), plus there’s a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/stores/go-outdoors-hathersage?utm_campaign=GO01290&amp;utm_source=google%20listings&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;y_source=1_MTMyNzExNjMtNzE1LWxvY2F0aW9uLndlYnNpdGU=" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Go Outdoors Express</a>&nbsp;for big brand outdoor essentials. </p>



<p>As well as a couple of convenience stores, you’ll find a small, well-stocked greengrocer and&nbsp;<a href="https://harringtonsbutchers.com/hathersage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harrington’s butcher</a>&nbsp;for good local meat.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.davidmellordesign.com/shops/hathersage" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">David Mellor shop and museum</a>&nbsp;just outside the village is a great place for a design-led browse, while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.parkdesigns.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Park Designs</a>&nbsp;has gorgeous Peak District inspired art and gifts. In Castleton <a href="https://theoldbarncastleton.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Old Barn</a> stocks a bit of everything – from walking boots and dog treats to clothes and gifts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>Your local pool, in Hathersage, is a beaut.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hathersageswimmingpool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hathersage Lido</a>, a refurbished 30m outdoor heated swimming pool was built in 1936 but refurbished during the pandemic and is surrounded by beautiful Peak District hills. It even opens for illuminated night swims with live music. For kids of mountain goat persuasion, there&#8217;s a brilliant junior fell running club <a href="https://hopefellrace.co.uk/hope-valley-runners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hope Valley Hurricanes. </a>There are a smattering of gyms in the valley (including&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bestyou.live/gym" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Best You Fitness</a>) and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.openhousehathersage.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">community yoga and wellbeing classes</a>, but it’s the outdoor exercise you’ll move here for – climbing, hiking, mountain biking – you’re spoilt for choice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>The villages of the Hope Valley, and particularly Hathersage, have a vibrant, welcoming and close-knit community which cherishes the idea of connection. <a href="https://www.openhousehathersage.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Open House Hathersage</a> is the embodiment of this, in the old RBS Bank building at the heart of the village as a community space for coming together. Games nights, yoga, sea shanties, sound baths – you name it, this place will host a pop-up for it. Downstairs there’s a brilliant community kitchen and café serving up nourishing whole foods and bowl foods. Just up the hill, there’s also a large, well-used Memorial Hall for community events, while in Castleton there’s an annual open gardens event and a packed <a href="https://castletonvillage.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">calendar</a> of village events.</p>



<p>No surprise that in Edale, the start of the famous Pennine Way, community events focus on the great outdoors. Each year the village hosts a family-friendly <a href="https://www.edalecountryday.org.uk/">Country Day</a>, a brilliant bonfire night and Halloween party, &nbsp;as well as, er, <a href="https://spoonfest.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SpoonFest</a>&nbsp;– an international festival of the carved wooden spoon! If you’re a runner, you’re in the right place. This is home to the infamous <a href="https://www.thespinerace.com/race/montane-winter-spine/montane-winter-spine-spine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spine Race</a>&nbsp;(one of the toughest fell races in the world),&nbsp;<a href="https://www.peakskyline.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Skyline Race</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kinderbarrelraceedale.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Beer Barrel Race</a>.</p>

<p>Some of the Peak District National Park’s most iconic walks and climbing spots on your doorstep. Head high to the moors and up to stunning&nbsp;<a href="https://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/business-directory/stanage-edge" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanage Edge</a>&nbsp;and National Trust-managed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/peak-district-derbyshire/longshaw-burbage-and-the-eastern-moors" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Longshaw</a>&nbsp;or descend into the valley and woodlands of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/business-directory/padley-gorge" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Padley Gorge</a>. One of Britain’s best-loved country houses,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chatsworth</a>, is seven miles away.</p>

<p>This valley is well-known for its literary connections (it was Bronte’s inspiration for Jane Eyre) and its links with legends (the area is peppered with spots linked to Robin Hood and Little John). Hathersage is home to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.davidmellordesign.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">David Mellor Design Museum</a>&nbsp;and country house&nbsp;<a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chatsworth</a>&nbsp;hosts a brilliant programme of cultural events. For independents, the closest is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sanselms.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">S. Anselm’s Prep School</a>&nbsp;in Bakewell. For secondaries, bag an address on the Sheffield side to get the kids into outstanding&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ecgbert.sheffield.sch.uk/page/?title=Ofsted+%26amp%3B+Performance&amp;pid=59" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King Ecgbert School</a>&nbsp;in Dore or head the other way to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hopevalley.chorustrust.org/page/?title=Ofsted&amp;pid=69" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hope Valley College</a>&nbsp;in Hope (rated Good). </p>
