<p>A little bit of country, a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll. Chesterfield offers plenty of small community and rural outdoorsy fun, plus fast motorway access for a super-speedy commute and easy access to big city nightlife. Famed for its 13<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;century crooked spire this canalside market town is just 11 miles from Sheffield and 24 miles from both Derby and Nottingham as well as being right next to the well-connected M1. Cosmopolitan it ain’t, but Chesterfield has a strong sense of community, a good selection of schools and the beautiful Peak District in its back garden. It’s still good value too, with house prices coming in lower than the East Midlands average.</p>

Muddy Award-winning bar <a href="https://armisteadsbar.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Armisteads</a> is great for cocktails and nights out with friends. For plant-based eats, there’s <a href="https://figarowingerworth.wixsite.com/website" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Figaro</a> in Wingerworth. <a href="https://www.lombardis-restaurant.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lombardi’s</a> is a locals’ favourite for rustic Italian fare, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Filippellisbistrochesterfield/?locale=en_GB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Filippelli&#8217;s Bistro &amp; Bar&nbsp;</a>does brilliant breakfasts. </p>



<p>Sucker for a local bakery? <a href="https://www.forgebakehouse.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Forge Bakehouse</a> has a stonking range of artisan breads and pastries. Step away from the town centre and venture into the surrounding villages and a whole world of fine dining opens up. New addition to the Michelin Guide, gastropub <a href="https://cutthorpe.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bull’s Head</a> in Holymoorside has a stellar reputation locally for mouth-watering modern cuisine, <a href="https://cutthorpe.net/">The Peacock</a> at Cutthorpe is popular for Sunday lunches and the <a href="https://www.peakedgehotel.co.uk/eat/red-lion-restaurant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Lion</a> at Peak Edge Hotel does fabulous laid-back, all day grazing.</p>

<p>Squirrel out hidden gems at the town’s regular traditional markets or pop into The Yards for independent shops, cafés and restaurants (oh, and a jelly puppy sculpture). <a href="https://adornjewellerschesterfield.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Adorn</a> has cute and quirky jewellery, <a href="https://www.freds-haberdashery.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fred’s</a> is a treasure trove of sewing and craft, while foodie favourite <a href="http://www.cheese-factor.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Cheese Factor</a> is brilliant for English and continental cheeses. A magpie’s dream <a href="https://www.olympiahouse.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Olympia House Antiques and Craft Centre</a> is well worth a mooch – currently closed after severe flooding but working hard to re-open as soon as it can. Plenty of high street favourites at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vicarlaneshoppingcentre.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vicar Lane Shopping Centre</a>&nbsp;plus out of town regulars like TK MAXX, Hobbycraft and The Range. For a serious retail fix, shopping mecca&nbsp;<a href="https://www.meadowhall.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Meadowhall</a>&nbsp;is just up the M1.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>Chesterfield is flush with green spaces and the jewel in its crown is beautiful Queen’s Park in the town centre. Seven of the town’s parks have Green Flag status putting them firmly in the top tier and there’s a hefty £1m being invested into parks and green spaces over the next five years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>Festivals and farmers’ markets are popular here with a regular Artisan Market, a monthly <a href="https://www.facebook.com/aarecordfairs/">record fair</a> in the town centre (which takes over <a href="https://www.thebatch.house/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Batch House</a> on a Friday too) and a hugely popular Forties Market which takes over the town each Easter. There’s a free two-day children’s festival in Queen’s Park every summer – the latest was an eclectic mix of virtual reality swings, Bollywood dancing, catwalks, circus skills and more. Plus, there are plenty of other summer festivals, like the street food and live music of the Peddler Market, Proms in the Park at Bolsover Castle and fabulous family-friendly music fest the <a href="http://www.stainsbyfestival.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stainsby Festival</a> in a nearby hamlet.</p>

<p>Country houses and glorious gardens galore in this neck of the woods with <a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chatsworth</a>, <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/peak-district-derbyshire/hardwick">Hardwick Hall</a> and <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/bolsover-castle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bolsover Castle</a> all within easy reach. The <a href="https://crookedspire.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crooked spire</a> is hard to miss but most don’t know you can climb it. It’s 152 steps to the top of the tower where some pretty stunning views await.</p>



<p>Cruise, kayak or paddleboard along the <a href="https://chesterfield-canal-trust.org.uk/on-the-water/canoeing-on-the-chesterfield-canal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chesterfield Canal</a> or enjoy a spot of stargazing at <a href="https://chesterfield-observatory.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chesterfield Observatory</a>. The Peak District is literally on the doorstep and beautiful, bluebell-peppered <a href="https://visitpeakdistrict.com/business-directory/linacre-reservoirs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Linacre Reservoirs</a> is great for walking, cycling and horseriding.</p>

<p>Not one but two Grade II-listed theatres in town to catch concerts, comedy and theatre. <a href="https://chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk/shows/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Winding Wheel Theatre</a> attracts some decent names and <a href="https://chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk/shows/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pomegranate Theatre</a> is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound spruce-up to extend the theatre and upgrade the museum. <a href="https://www.chesterfield.co.uk/about-chesterfield/story-of-chesterfield/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chesterfield</a>&nbsp;is full of hidden gems when it comes to artwork and culture. <p>Silver screen legend Sir John Hurt CBE was born in Chesterfield and his dad was also the vicar of St Stephen&#8217;s Church in Woodville in the south of the county.</p>

<p>Set slap, bang in the middle of the country, it’s easy to reach just about anywhere. Chesterfield has excellent transport links to nearby towns and cities.
