<p>Surrounded by lush parkland, Allestree (literally ‘place of all the trees’) lives up to its name in every sense. To the north, glorious Allestree Park’s 320-acre nature reserve is the star of an ambitious rewilding project, while family favourite Markeaton Park lies to the south with its adventure playground and craft village. Eastwards, Darley Park sweeps elegantly towards Derby city centre, and to the southwest, the grand Kedleston Estate completes the picture-perfect setting. The old hilltop village feels leafy and rural with its network of footpaths and park cut-throughs, while the southern end brings neat Seventies-style homes with generous gardens. Add in top-notch schools, easy A38 access and that irresistible mix of greenery and city convenience, and it’s easy to see why Allestree is one of Derby’s most desirable patches.</p>

<p>Foodies rejoice! There&#8217;s a great gastropub local &#8211; 17th century pub&nbsp;<a href="https://www.redcowallestree.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Red Cow</a> in the heart of the old village by the Norman church. With a large beer garden, good food and a recently redecorated garden restaurant, it’s a popular spot. Brilliant gastropub <a href="https://theja.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Joiners Arms</a> is also just up the road in Quardon, known for its wood-fired pizzas and mouth-watering skewers. Just a hop across the A38 in Darley Abbey, you’ll find fabulous al fresco dining spots, including <a href="https://darleys.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Darleys Restaurant</a> overlooking the mesmerising weir and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thecottonworksderby/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lorentes</a>, with its beautiful leafy terrace and tapas dishes. For drinks, <a href="https://darleyabbeywines.co.uk/?fbclid=IwAR1RMRX21N6VIU1nCfP8vqkmaLF5QEEDRQsm_0dWEyzk0qJeAZqDM2UWtXw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Darley Abbey Wines</a> hosts regular tasting events, live music and cheese and charcuterie boards.</p>



<p>For coffee and cake catch-ups, make a beeline for indie coffee shop and café <a href="https://thelittleshedderbyshire.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Little Shed</a> on Park Lane. <p>For High Street fashion, <a href="https://www.derbion.com/">Derbion</a> is an easy 10-minute drive and the indie shops of quaint Sadler Gate (including Muddy Awards winners <a href="https://www.derbion.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tubo Gift Shop</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/p/Milk-Honey-Deli-100057406693036/?locale=en_GB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milk &amp; Honey Deli</a>) are even closer. For essentials and day-to-day shopping, Park Farm shopping centre may not be much to look at (this was a Sixties shopping mecca and it’s not had much of an update), but with three hours of free parking and all the essentials it’s undoubtedly handy. Alongside a Co-op, Savers, Boots and B&amp;M, you’ll find <a href="https://birdsbakery.com/pages/our-stores/allestree" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Birds Bakery</a> (with a decent-sized café), <a href="https://www.facebook.com/people/Park-Farm-Butchers/61573049547304/?_rdr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Park Farm Butchers</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/p/Park-Farm-Greengrocers-100008633928387/?locale=en_GB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Park Farm Grocers</a> for local foodie produce. Shopping for gorgeous gifts? Head to <a href="https://www.alittlemooch.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">A Little Mooch</a> for Jellycats and more, stock up on candles, diffusers and oils at master chandlers <a href="https://www.henryandcofragrance.co.uk/henry-and-co-allestree" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Henry &amp; Co</a>, while up at the Duffield Road end of Allestree you’ll find <a href="https://thelittleshedderbyshire.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Little Shed</a>, a perfectly pretty gift shop with some great picks for gorgeous clothes or jewellery.</p>

<p>Looking after yourself is pretty easy in Allestree – especially if you like to get your step count up. Whether it’s a quick dog walk or a long run around the 320-acre Allestree Park, there are plenty of easy-to-access options from the doorstep. How about a wildlife-rich walk around the lovely 2km <a href="https://www.friendsofallestreepark.org.uk/images/park/Main-Nature-Trail-revision-2018.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nature trail</a> that takes in the lake? Or, head west into the shaded woodlands of aptly-named <a href="https://www.friendsofallestreepark.org.uk/images/park/Big-Wood-Nature-Trail-revision-2018.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Wood</a> where you’ll find more trails. At the southern end of Allestree, it’s a short walk to Markeaton Park (and the Saturday morning parkrun).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>Not just a sprawling suburb, Allestree has real heart. Families will love the annual Scarecrow Festival and the re-wilding of Allestree Park has brought the community together in a big way, with volunteer groups bringing people together to give nature a helping hand. Residents celebrated 200 years of the lake by throwing a festival-style bash this summer.</p>

<p>National Trust property <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/peak-district-derbyshire/kedleston-hall" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kedleston Hall</a> (pictured) is on the doorstep and is like a mini Chatsworth with glorious gardens and a packed calendar of seasonal events like al fresco theatre and kids’ workshops. A 15 min drive in the other direction, <a href="https://bluebelldairy.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bluebell Dairy</a> is fun for families and dishes up delicious artisan ice cream. If hiking, climbing and biking are on your weekend wish-list, you can be in the Peak District within half an hour.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>Culture vultures have plenty on their doorstep. The marvellous <a href="https://www.derbymuseums.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Museum of Making</a> at Derby Silk Mill is your side of the city, <a href="https://derbytheatre.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Derby Theatre</a> is home to some stonking shows, while <a href="https://www.derbyquad.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quad</a> is a great place for mainstream and quirky films, art exhibitions and workshops. Long-listed in its last <a href="https://culturederby.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bid</a> to become a City of Culture, Derby now has its sights set on 2029. <a href="https://www.visitderby.co.uk/listings/vaillant-live" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vaillant Live</a> (a 10 minute drive) is the latest new concert venue to open, with a host of big name bands on the calendar.</p>

Raising a wild child? <a href="https://www.derbyshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/nature-tots" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Allestree Park Nature Tots</a>, a nature-based pre-school playgroup where you stay with your child, is newly launched.</p>

<p>A great spot for schools, with the outstanding <a href="https://www.lawn.derby.sch.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lawn Primary School</a> and <a href="https://www.walterevans.derby.sch.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walter Evans</a> rated good overall but outstanding in many areas. <a href="https://www.portwayi.derby.sch.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Portway Infant School</a> and <a href="https://www.portwayj.derby.sch.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Portway Junior School</a> are rated good, and the UK’s first ‘biophilic’ school (focused around plants and wildlife) <a href="https://www.stmarysderby.srscmat.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy</a> claims to be the UK&#8217;s greenest school and is close by.</p>



<p>For secondaries, <a href="https://www.woodlands.derby.sch.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Allestree Woodlands School</a> is rated good and has a Sixth Form. <a href="https://www.stbenedictderby.srscmat.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saint Benedict</a> is the Catholic secondary academy, rated Good by Ofsted and outstanding <a href="https://landau-forte.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Landau Forte College</a> is nearby. For independents, there’s the Excellent-rated <a href="https://www.oldvicarageschool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Old Vicarage School</a>, with small class sizes and a family feel for Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep. All-through school <a href="https://derbyhigh.derby.sch.uk/">Derby High</a> is rated Excellent and sporty <a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/repton-school-repton/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Repton</a> is just across the A50. <a href="https://www.derby.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Derby</a>&#8216;s leafy main campus is also in Allestree on Kedleston Road.</p>

<p>The village is right by the main A38 that runs south to Burton and north to the M1, well-connected Derby station is in the city centre and East Midlands airport is a 20 min drive. For local journeys (including popping into the city centre), there’s a great little <a href="https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/services/allestree" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bus route</a> every 20 mins into Derby and back.</p>
