<p>Talk about a prime location. Perched at the top of the prettiest street in Nottingham in the hippest part of town, four star <a href="https://www.lacemarkethotel.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lace Market Hotel</a> is a masterclass in Georgian grandeur. Once townhouses, the striking grade II-listed building has a perfectly-balanced façade of beautiful red brick and elegant sash windows. Its coveted corner spot in the old lace-making quarter, overlooking St Mary’s Church on one side and cobbled High Pavement on the other, makes it all the more arresting.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s joined to the Cock &amp; Hoop pub (its own actual pub within the hotel, rather than just a hotel bar) and shopping, theatres, museums and the best of the city’s restaurants are all just a stroll away.</p>

<p>Step inside and the spacious reception area is seriously swanky. With a gilded starburst mirror adorning the wall and statement gold look-at-me light hanging from the ceiling, it&#8217;s a luxe first impression.</p>

<p>Venture further inside and you get a hip, arty vibe. Cool, local artwork and sculptures pepper the communal areas and there are nods to the building’s history, which was at the centre of the world’s lace industry in the 19th century. Funky art gallery Nottingham Contemporary is just across the street and this place feels like it fits with its creative neighbours.</p>

<p>Stay here and you may just bump into a famous face or two. With the Motorpoint Arena and the city’s theatres on the doorstep, celeb guests are pretty common. Peep behind the huge double doors in reception and you’ll see dozens of famous signatures from celebrities who’ve spent the night here (in fact Lewis Capaldi had just checked out when I checked in).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pillow-talk">PILLOW TALK</h2>

<p>I stay in one of the three swanky Studio Suites (there are also spacious Kings and Doubles, five Superior Suites and The Hideout, which has its own private entrance). And it&#8217;s packed with wow factor. Split-level so it feels like a chic appartment, it&#8217;s a dual-aspect corner room, so when you walk in you get to look down on the lounge area, cute dressing room and gigantic bed, elevated on its own raised floor. Period features a-plenty, from vast sash windows that bathe the room in sunlight to high ceilings. </p>

<p>What really sets it apart though are the wraparound views. Beautifully framed by rich, drapey curtains, you&#8217;ve got gorgeous St Mary&#8217;s Church and its leafy graveyard on one side and the handsome old law courts (now the brilliant National Justice Museum) on the other.</p>

<p>It feels calm, cool and contemporary (although not bang-up-to-the-minute contemporary). If I&#8217;m honest, the colour palette of oranges and browns, doesn&#8217;t quite hit the mark for me, but not all the rooms share this hue. </p>



<p>There&#8217;s a Lavazza coffee machine, Twinings teas and scrummy Meredith &amp; Drew biscuits to keep you going. The bathroom is a beaut&#8217; too, with freestanding bath, powerful shower and lovely <em>Nature Remedies</em> toiletries.</p>



<p>Love your sleep? You&#8217;ll have no worries here. Although it&#8217;s right in the heart of the city, it&#8217;s supremely peaceful here at night. Comfort won&#8217;t be an issue either &#8211; the super king Respa bed is a dream. I never sleep well the first night in a new pad, but the sweet spot of not-too-soft/not-too-firm was so off the scale, I was out like a light.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>

<p>Drinks before you head out on the town? The cosy <a href="https://www.lacemarkethotel.co.uk/cock-hoop" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cock &amp; Hoop</a> that&#8217;s part of the hotel is a down-to-earth, traditional pub. Sadly, there&#8217;s no full restaurant here any more but you can order pizzas until 9pm. From Wed to Sat, casual food is served from 12-7pm too &#8211; think burgers, flatbreads and small plates like nachos and chicken wings. Proper pints of cask and craft beer if that&#8217;s your thing, or £9 cocktails on offer too.</p>



<p>It was a <a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/eat-out/sunday-night-dinner-where-to-eat-in-nottingham-on-a-sunday-evening/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sunday night</a> visit for me, but in this buzzy part of town, that&#8217;s not a problem. There&#8217;s everything from chic Piccolino at the end of the street to newcomers like Noshi and The Ivy a few streets beyond.</p>

<p>The pub doubles as your breakfast spot, with a full continental of cereals, pastries, cold meats and fruit laid out near the bar and an excellent cooked menu to pick from. There&#8217;s everything from Full English (or Full Vegan) to eggs every which way, Benedict, Florentine, Royal or plan old scrambled. I plumped for smashed avo on toast with poached eggs and bacon. Excellent. Generous portions, perfectly-poached eggs and brilliant, flavourful bacon. </p>

<p>The very best of Nottingham is right on your doorstep. Directly opposite you&#8217;ll find the imaginative and interactive National Justice Museum which has a packed calendar of events and is always a hit with families. A few metres beyond that, you&#8217;ve got Nottingham Contemporary with its cool, design-led gift shop and enticing exhibitions. Even Nottingham Castle is only six minutes&#8217; walk away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-child-amp-dog-friendly">CHILD &amp; DOG-FRIENDLY?</h2>



<p>Visiting en famille? Book the triple Hideout with a king bed and sofa bed or book up to two extra beds in a suite at £25 per bed per night. Dogs are welcome and there are a few specific dog-friendly rooms. You&#8217;ll need to fork out £25 per stay and stay with your pooch at all times. They&#8217;re also welcome in the Cock &amp; Hoop on a lead.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accessibility">ACCESSIBILITY</h2>



<p>The hotel reception has three small steps at the main entrance, but there are two ground floor superior rooms which can be accessed via another, step-free entrance. The pub (and breakfast) is accessible directly from the street.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-getting-here">GETTING HERE</h2>



<p>A 10-minute walk from the station, the train is your best bet. If you&#8217;re brining the car, there&#8217;s no hotel car park so expect city centre prices in the nearest NCP (£16 overnight).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> City shopping breaks, cultural weekends, foodie trips. This easy-to-love Georgian beauty makes the perfect, peaceful base for a buzzy break in Nottingham if you&#8217;re looking to make the most of the city.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> If you love to check in and never leave, floating around a hotel and maxing the facilities, this probably isn&#8217;t the place. No lounge, spa or communal wafting spots &#8211; just the pub.</p>



<p><strong>The damage: </strong>Brilliant value for a four star city centre hotel in such a peaceful location. Rooms cost from £70, breakfast is £15 for adults and £10 for kids.&nbsp;Prices for the Studio Suite start at £160.</p>
