The Horseshoes, Long Lane
Stand-out food, seasonal tasting menus, and a beaut’ of a beer garden – foodies’ favourite The Horseshoes is truly a gastropub great.

Every now and then I stumble upon a hidden gem that I can’t believe more people don’t know about. Tucked away in the peaceful village of Long Lane, quaint country pub The Horseshoes is one such place – a knockout destination dining spot that deserves to be found.
The setting is peaceful, rural Derbyshire at its finest, yet it’s only 15 minutes from Derby and Ashbourne, and a short hop from the southern edge of the Peak District National Park.
Part classic country pub, part modern British dining experience, there is no doubt the food is the star here. It recently scooped two AA rosettes for culinary excellence and the ever-changing seasonal menus showcase fresh, local produce. There’s a great wine list and a stunner of a seasonal cocktail menu too (favourites include the Shoestar Martini, Chocolate Orange Espresso Martini and a classic Old Fashioned).
You can take your pick from a couple of different dining areas depending on your mood. There’s the main dining room, comfortable and contemporary with floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the courtyard garden. Or maybe the cosy shabby chic corners suit the vibe you’re after? Then there’s the pub proper – a classic cosy country pub with leather seats, gilt-framed pictures and woodburning fires.
With live music every Saturday from 3pm-5pm between May and September, it’s a no-brainer for summer weekends. The garden is gorgeous, complete with super-stylish heated dining pods for chillier evenings and a sleek Airstream outdoor bar.
