<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h2>



<p>Newly re-opened after a £50,000 revamp, with an ambitious new head chef and brilliant restaurant manager, <a href="https://thewhitehartmoorwoodmoor.co.uk/fork-and-furrow/">The Fork &amp; Furrow</a> is out to put its field-to-fork food on the map.</p>



<p>Part of the White Hart Hotel (popular for weddings), it’s a contemporary red-brick building nestled in a gorgeous rural spot on Moorwood Moor, surrounded by rolling fields and very little else. &nbsp;We’re in the sticks here (yet only a five-minute drive from the A38) and it’s beautiful.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>



<p>Step inside and the views all but disappear. With small windows and low beamed ceilings it&#8217;s intimate, cosy and instantly welcoming. The swish new makeover has done a brilliant job of fusing the rustic with the modern. A Instagrammable neon sign set against a living moss wall greets you as you walk in, the rafters are packed with lush foliage hanging overhead and cool, exposed bulbs give it a funky modern edge. </p>

<p>The beautiful flagstone floors and chunky oak furniture (from Indigo in Matlock) stop if from feeling flash though. The whole restaurant has a lovely, warm, earthy feel. It&#8217;s informal and relaxed, but still manages to feel special. As the rain poured down outside, it felt like a cosy, comforting place to be.</p>

<p>Restaurant manager Tom Shelbourn has pedigree, coming from a five-star hotel that boasts two AA Rosettes and a Michelin star, and it shows. He&#8217;s brilliantly welcoming and attentive and delivers slick, professional service that makes you feel like you&#8217;re in five star surroundings.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>



<p>The very pretty menu was my kind of menu. A good choice of eight small plates (which you can mix up tapas style or enjoy one as a starter) and six mains. Plenty to pick from but not overwhelming. </p>



<p>Ambitious head chef Adam Jones has Michelin star ambitions and it&#8217;s clear from his food that he is passionate about dishing up excellent locally-sourced food with flair and panache.</p>

<p>When crab is on the menu, I am powerless to resist, so I went for the Crab Cakes. Decorated with dainty, delicate baby salad leaves and chargrilled courgettes, it looked lovely. Tasted even better, with moist crab cakes and a punchy watercress purée.</p>



<p>I suffered a bit of menu envy when my pal&#8217;s Korean-fried Chicken arrived, which looked even more delicious and, judging by her ooh&#8217;s and ahh&#8217;s, delivered big on the flavour-front with its tasty fermented chilli sauce.</p>

<p>For main course, it was Lamb Kleftico Flatbread with melt-in-the-mouth barbecued lamb, roasted aubergine and lemon and garlic hummus. Delicious and deceptively filling.</p>

<p>Ah, but the best was yet to come. Both stuffed from our deceptively fillings mains, we asked to share the Dark Chocolate Delice. And what a showstopper of a dish! Smooth, melt-in-the-mouth chocolate, lifted by a zingy passion fruit sorbet and a crunch of toffee popcorn. Dee-licious. I&#8217;d recommend saving space for desserts &#8211; they&#8217;re stand-out sensational.</p>

<p>I didn&#8217;t stay at the White Hart next door, but I had a good nose around some of  the 17 rooms and they&#8217;re lovely. Fresh, light and modern. The chunky oak furniture of the restaurant continues here, with comfortable, rustic-looking beds set against contemporary country wallpapered walls and leaded windows. The bathrooms are high end (and all feature White Company products) and the views from the rooms at the rear have gorgeous views of rolling fields of gold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-out-about">OUT &amp; ABOUT</h2>



<p>It was tipping down the day I visited so a walk wasn&#8217;t on the cards, but this is a lovely area for country strolls if the weather is on your side. Try the <a href="https://explore.osmaps.com/route/6998961/south-wingfield-moorwood-moor-and-wingfield-manor-amber-valley?lat=53.099904&amp;lon=-1.457018&amp;zoom=14.5592&amp;style=Standard&amp;type=2d">easy two hour loop</a> through Moorwood Moor, South Wingfield and up to <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/wingfield-manor/">Wingfield Manor</a> (unfortunately now closed to the public, but you get a good view of it). <a href="https://www.leagarden.co.uk/">Lea Gardens</a>, known for its dazzling displays of rhododendrons is close if you&#8217;re here in the spring and <a href="https://www.tramway.co.uk/">Crich Tramway Village</a> is a five minute drive away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-damage">THE DAMAGE</h2>



<p>On the lunch menu (available Wed-Sat with a separate Sunday menu on offer) small plates cost £8.95, mains cost £16.50 and puddings are £8.95. Here for dinner? Starters come in between £10 and £14 and mains are between £18 and £30.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Perfect for a special weekend family feast or Sunday roast. But just as good in the evenings when the lights dim and it takes on a cool, clubby feel for date night dinners or an evening with friends.</p>



<p><strong>Not for: </strong>Dogs are only allowed in the bar and lounge, so maybe not the place for refuelling after a dog walk. Maybe not the place for younger children either.</p>
