<p>Brimming with character, Hathersage is well-known for its literary connections (it was Bronte’s inspiration for Jane Eyre) and its links with legends (the village is peppered with spots linked to Robin Hood and Little John). With dramatic Stanage Edge a stone’s throw away and some of the best-loved Peak District walks on the doorstep – it’s a catnip for climbers, hikers and cyclists. In the heart of the countryside but less than 10 miles from Sheffield city centre, it punches above its weight for fab foodie haunts too. Pre-hike breakfast spots, post walk pitstops and cool cafés, Hathersage is home to them all.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.scotsmanspackcountryinn.co.uk/">The Scotsman’s Pack pub</a> is a local fave and longstanding local <a href="https://thegeorgehathersage.com/">The George</a> (once frequented by Charlotte Bronte) is all old oak beams with contemporary styling and is fab for Sunday roasts and easy-going dinners. After flooding last year it has recently reopened after a stylish revamp. <a href="https://www.bankhousehathersage.co.uk/">Bank House</a> is all about fresh, seasonal, local food with a Mediterranean twist – great for nights out with friends (excellent cocktails too). <a href="https://riversidekitchen.uk/">Riverside Kitchen at David Mellor</a> overlooks Michael Hopkins&#8217;s striking Round Building or spice it up at Indian restaurant <a href="https://maazi.co.uk/">Maazi</a>.</p>



<p>For daytime eats, coffee aficionados should head to <a href="https://www.colemansdeli.com/">Colemans Deli</a> (where the doorstep sandwiches are pretty good too). Still quite new, <a href="https://hathersagekitchen.co.uk/">Hathersage Kitchen by Evangaline</a> is cool contemporary daytime hangout, with a gorgeous garden for al fresco lunches. <a href="https://www.openhousehathersage.com/daily-kitchen">Open House Hathersage </a>dishes up nourishing, organic soul foods. Another newcomer <a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/bike-boot-peak-district-derbyshire/">Bike &amp; Boot</a>, just outside the village, is great for post-walk pitstops and informal dinners with pooch in tow.</p>

<p>You’re in the heart of climbing country here, so outdoorsy types will be able to flex the credit card on every corner. Locals fave <a href="https://www.outside.co.uk/">Outside </a>has been selling climbing clobber and outdoorsy kit here for 30 years (and even has a <a href="https://www.outside.co.uk/our-cafe/">café</a> to fuel up in first), British brand <a href="https://alpkit.com/pages/hathersage">Alpkit</a> is on the main road (offering extras like yoga sessions, boulder mat and bike hire and a repair station for fixing your outdoor kit), plus there’s a <a href="https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/stores/go-outdoors-hathersage?utm_campaign=GO01290&amp;utm_source=google%20listings&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;y_source=1_MTMyNzExNjMtNzE1LWxvY2F0aW9uLndlYnNpdGU=">Go Outdoors Express</a> for big brand outdoor essentials. As well as a couple of convenience stores, you’ll find a small, well-stocked greengrocer and <a href="https://harringtonsbutchers.com/hathersage/">Harrington’s butcher</a> for good local meat. <a href="https://www.davidmellordesign.com/shops/hathersage">David Mellor shop and museum</a> just outside the village is a great place for a design-led browse, while <a href="https://www.parkdesigns.co.uk/">Park Designs</a> has gorgeous Peak District inspired art and gifts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>Your local pool, in the heart of the village, is a beaut. <a href="https://www.hathersageswimmingpool.co.uk/">Hathersage Lido</a>, a refurbished 30m outdoor heated swimming pool was built in 1936 but refurbished during the pandemic and is surrounded by beautiful Peak District hills. It even opens for illuminated night swims with live music.  There are a smattering of gyms (including <a href="https://www.bestyou.live/gym">Best You Fitness</a>) and <a href="https://www.openhousehathersage.com/">community yoga and wellbeing classes</a>, but it&#8217;s the outdoor exercise you&#8217;ll move here for &#8211; climbing, hiking, mountain biking &#8211; you&#8217;re spoilt for choice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>Hathersage has a vibrant, welcoming and close-knit community which cherishes the idea of connection. <a href="https://www.openhousehathersage.com/">Open House Hathersage</a> is the embodiment of this, opened at the end of 2023 in the old RBS Bank building at the heart of the village as a community space for coming together. And it&#8217;s been a runaway success. Games nights, yoga, sea shanties, sound baths – you name it, this places will host a pop-up for it. Downstairs there’s a brilliant community kitchen and café serving up nourishing whole foods and bowl foods. Just up the hill, there&#8217;s also a large, well-used Memorial Hall for community events.</p>

<p>Hathersage is home to the <a href="https://www.davidmellordesign.com/">David Mellor Design Museum</a> (named after the designer not naughty Tory government minister) and country house <a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/">Chatsworth</a> is just eight miles away. The theatres and galleries of Sheffield are just 10 miles away. <a href="https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/">Buxton Opera House</a> and the <a href="https://chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk/">Winding Wheel Theatre</a> and <a href="https://chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk/">Pomegranate Theatre</a> in Chesterfield are all within half an hour’s drive.</p>

<p>You’re in the heart of the dramatic Hope Valley here and have some of the Park’s most iconic walks and climbing spots on your doorstep. Head high to the moors and up to stunning <a href="https://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/business-directory/stanage-edge">Stanage Edge</a> and National Trust-managed <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/peak-district-derbyshire/longshaw-burbage-and-the-eastern-moors">Longshaw</a> or descend into the valley and woodlands of <a href="https://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/business-directory/padley-gorge">Padley Gorge</a>. One of Britain&#8217;s best-loved country houses, <a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/">Chatsworth</a>, is seven miles away.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.st-michaels.derbyshire.sch.uk/nursery">Hathersage St Michael’s</a> has a nursery called Little Kinder and just outside the village in Bamford you’ll find the ‘Good’ rated outdoorsy <a href="https://bamfordpreschool.co.uk/">&nbsp;Bamford Pre-School Playgroup.</a></p>

<p>For primary age kids, the village school is <a href="https://www.st-michaels.derbyshire.sch.uk/nursery">Hathersage St Michael’s CofE</a> is rated Good in its last inspection. For independents, the closest is <a href="https://www.sanselms.co.uk/">S. Anselm’s Prep School</a> in Bakewell. For secondaries, bag an address on the Sheffield side to get the kids into outstanding <a href="https://www.ecgbert.sheffield.sch.uk/page/?title=Ofsted+%26amp%3B+Performance&amp;pid=59">King Ecgbert School</a> in Dore or head the other way to <a href="https://www.hopevalley.chorustrust.org/page/?title=Ofsted&amp;pid=69">Hope Valley College</a> in Hope (rated Good).
