<p>Baslow, a quaint village nestled in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside near&nbsp;Bakewell, is&nbsp;often hailed as an idyllic place to live. With its picturesque surroundings, charming stone cottages, and a strong sense of community, it certainly has its appeals. Perched on the fringes of the rolling Chatsworth estate with the dramatic gritstone edges of the Peak District as a backdrop, Baslow ticks all the boxes as idyllic place to live. A magnet for outdoorsy types – from climbers to hikers – the village also has a strong pull for foodies, with three top-notch fine dining restaurants.</p>



<p>Quaint it may be, but it also has the main thoroughfare from the M1 into the Peak District running through it. Great for a speedy commute out to Chesterfield and Sheffield, but often busy in summer months.</p>

<p>Foodies rejoice! It’s fine dining heaven here. Michelin-listed (but no longer Michelin-starred) <a href="https://www.fischers-baslowhall.co.uk/">Fischer’s at Baslow Hall</a> is known for its fabulous locally-sourced food and its new terrace is a lovely spot for a summer cocktail. <a href="https://riversidehousehotel.co.uk/">Rafters at Riverside House</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://thepeacockatrowsley.com/">The Peacock</a>&nbsp;at Rowsley are also in the Michelin Guide. The newly revamped Gallery Restaurant at&nbsp;<a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/the-cavendish-hotel-baslow-derbyshire/">The Cavendish Hotel</a> comes highly rated too, with three AA Rosettes. It also has a gorgeous Garden Room restaurant with summer terrace for more informal dining and it&#8217;s afternoon teas are a total treat.</p>

If you need outdoor gear in a hurry, there’s a Regatta in next village, Curbar.</p>

<p>Kick off the stilettos and lace up your hiking boots, you’re spoilt for choice for lovely <a href="https://baslowvillage.com/walks-around-baslow/">local walks</a> – from the cycle-friendly <a href="https://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/places-to-visit/trails/monsaltrail">Monsal Trail</a>&nbsp;to the dramatic gritstone edges of <a href="https://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/miles-without-stiles/curbar-gap">Curbar Edge</a> and Baslow Edge. <p>Baslow has a small, close-knit community with plenty of one-off events going on at the village hall. If singing’s your thing there are a couple of choirs to get involved with (Baslow Choir and Bel Canto). An autumnal highlight is Apple Day every October with apple-themed games, stalls and music.</p>

<p>The stunning parkland and estate of <a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/">Chatsworth House</a> is basically your back garden if you plump for Baslow. There are miles of woodland walks and riverside strolls to enjoy as well as the house itself and the myriad of creative workshops and cultural events it lays on. An annual membership that makes you a <a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/visit-chatsworth/book-tickets/friends-membership/">Friend of Chatsworth</a> costs from £137 and could be worthwhile if you move here. For more heritage and glorious gardens, <a href="https://www.haddonhall.co.uk/">Haddon Hall</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thornbridgehall.co.uk/">Thornbridge Hall</a>&nbsp;are close by.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>



<p>For theatre and concerts, the <a href="https://chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk/">Winding Wheel</a> is 10 miles away in Chesterfield or <a href="https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/">Buxton Opera House</a> is a half hour drive in the other direction. For the buzz and bright lights of Sheffield, it’s less than an hour’s drive. Chatsworth also hosts al fresco theatre and cinema on summer evenings.</p>

<p>Looking for a local lad? Head for the hills. Local folklore says that before they are allowed to marry, the men of Baslow have to prove their manliness by scaling the huge tower of gritstone near Baslow Edge called The Eagle Stone.</p>

<p>Bakewell is 5 miles, Chesterfield is 10 miles, it&#8217;s 30 mins to reach the M1 and just under 1 hr to reach Sheffield city centre. Manchester is about 1 hr 20 mins away.</p>
