January is shaping up to be a barrel of laughs with stacks of great comedy kicking off the year. Fresh from his spin on the Strictly dancerfloor, <a href="https://nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk/events/chris-mccausland-yonks/">Chris McCausland</a> on Thurs 23 Jan at Nottingham Playhouse, before heading up to Buxton Opera House on Fri 24 Jan. If you miss him, there’s another chance when he takes his show to Derby Theatre on 3 April.



Following a record-breaking run at the Edinburgh Fringe and a sell-out season in the West End, <a href="https://trch.co.uk/whats-on/adam-kay-undoctored/">Adam Kay brings Undoctored</a> to Theatre Royal Nottingham on Sun 19 Jan.



Showcasing the brightest new names in comedy, <a href="https://www.ncfcomedy.co.uk/canalhouse-comedy-night">Canalhouse Comedy Nights</a> features a mixture of established acts trying new material and new acts. You never know what you&#8217;re going to get but it&#8217;s always a great laugh. Bookmark a Wednesday night for this one &#8211; comedy nights are scheduled for 8, 15 and 22 Jan.



The Live at the Apollo starRia Lina brings her new show <a href="https://www.ncfcomedy.co.uk/events.html_268502.html">Work in Progress</a> to the Nottingham Comedy Festival on Thurs 16 Jan. Tackling themes of feminism, womanhood and plain old common sense, Ria always delivers a blistering performance.



An evening of daftness sounds like just what we need in January and off the wall king of the one-liners Milton Jones is just the man for it. His new show <a href="https://chesterfieldtheatres.co.uk/shows/milton-jones-ha-milton/">Ha!milton</a> is on at Chesterfield&#8216;s Winding Wheel Theatre on Fri 17 Jan.

It&#8217;s ballet season! I&#8217;m looking forward to Varna International Ballet bringing a brilliant double bill to the Buxton Opera House, with <a href="https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/event/swan-lake-varna-international-ballet">Swan Lake</a> on&nbsp;Sat 4 Jan&nbsp;and <a href="https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/event/nutcracker-varna-international-ballet">The Nutcracker</a> on&nbsp;Sun 5 Jan. Planning further ahead? Later in the month, Varna will glide onto stage again at&nbsp;<a href="https://trch.co.uk/whats-on/varna-international-ballet/">Nottingham’s Theatre Roya</a>l from Thurs 30 Jan.



Spot of Shakespeare to kick off the year? Nothing more apt than <a href="https://derbytheatre.co.uk/event/the-winters-tale/">A Winter’s Tale</a> on Fri 10 and Sat 11 Jan at Derby Theatre. Gritty, bold and moving, Tracy Young&#8217;s version is set on a rundown council estate still waiting to be levelled up.



More gutsy performances at Theatre Royal Nottingham when <a href="https://trch.co.uk/whats-on/the-girl-on-the-train/">The Girl on the Train</a> is the star from Tues 21-Sat 25 Jan. Adapted from&nbsp;Paula Hawkins’&nbsp;novel, this gripping play is edge-of-the-seat stuff.



Now this sounds like a brilliant way to kickstart your Burns Night celebrations, a <a href="https://www.designmynight.com/nottingham/pubs/copper-city/burns-night-copper-city?t=tickets">Burns&#8217; Night Ceilidh</a><a href="https://schuggies-ceilidhs.co.uk/nottingham-ceilidh-club/"> </a>on Thurs 23 Jan at Copper City Nottingham. For £35, you&#8217;ll be treated to a piper on arrival, the traditional address to the haggis, and cracking ceilidh with music from The Big Moose Ceilidh Band.

Chatsworth’s workshops are always tempting and the first of the new year is an arty one, <a href="https://www.chatsworth.org/events/get-drawing-the-seasons/">Get Drawing the Seasons</a> on Sat 25 Jan. Explore Chatsworth’s glorious garden when it’s closed to everyone else and develop a range of drawing techniques and create new compositions inspired by the winter colours and vistas. You’ll hear tales about the lives of the Dukes of Newcastle and see Clumber in a whole new light. Sets off at dusk on 4 and 5 Jan. &nbsp;



Prefer to plod with your four-legged friend? The <a href="https://www.nottinghamshirewildlife.org/events/2025-01-14-stay-pawsitive-dog-walk">Stay Pawsitive Dog Walk</a>is a social occasion for you and your pooch on Tues 14 Jan from 2pm at Idle Valley nature reserve, Retford.



Poetry and fire is the theme of <a href="https://beestoncivicsociety.org.uk/beestonstreetart/light-night/">Beeston’s Light Night</a> (pictured) on Burns’ Night on Sat 25 Jan from 6pm-9pm. Light installations and performances – a brilliant way to beat the winter blues. And it’s completely free.



The <a href="https://www.nice-work.org.uk/e/tissington-trail-half-marathon-and-10k-saturday-9974">Tissington Trail 10k and half marathon</a> takes place on Sat 25 Jan. Starting from Ashbourne leisure centre, it’s an out and back route along the pretty Tissington Trail – slight uphill on the way out, then downhill for the last half.
