<p>Wollaton is gorgeous year-round but just look at its New England-esque beauty come autumn. There are few finer parks for an autumnal photo, especially with the deer or the handsome hall as a backdrop. Here on a Sunday? Warm up with one of <a href="https://www.mommabains.com/">Momma Bains’</a> (yep that’s mama to Michelin chef Sat) popular samosas. The Momma Bains truck starts at 11am until they sell out (which is usually pretty quickly!).</p>

<p>Glorious at any time of year but the gardens are at their best in autumn when the leaves on the trees vie for attention with the golden hues of the house. You can tailor walks around the estate to suit you, but be sure to take a gander at the Cascade, crowned by a fiery tiara of trees. Pitstop? Yomp across the estate as far as <a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/the-cavendish-hotel-baslow-derbyshire/">The Cavendish</a>, Baslow where a slap-up afternoon tea awaits in stylish, recently revamped, surrounds.</p>

<p>Hard to beat for autumn colour, Clumber Park is one of the best places in the county for a leaf-kicking walk. With a whopping 3,800 acres of beautiful parkland, lake and woodland, you’ve got a lot of room to roam. Lots to keep reluctant little walkers happy too, with a fab woodland play park and the option of den building in Leaping Bar, the natural play area at the top of the main visitor car park. Catch a cuppa in the <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/nottinghamshire-lincolnshire/clumber-park/eating-and-shopping-at-clumber-park">Turning Yard café.</a></p>

<p>Carve your own route through the 600 acre estate which explodes with colour come autumn. There are stacks of leafy routes from the Calke Explore car park, from family-friendly to longer yomps. Or, if you park in Ticknall, this <a href="https://www.alltrails.com/en-gb/trail/england/derbyshire/calke-abbey-circular#:~:text=This%20beautiful%20walk%20takes%20you,(ticket%20fees%20do%20apply).">6km circular walk</a> is lovely and takes less than a couple of hours. Duck into <a href="https://harpursofmelbourne.co.uk/">Harpurs</a> in the pretty village of Melbourne on your way home. Warm welcome guaranteed and the pizzas are something special.</p>

<p>Close to the city (just a mile away) and bursting with autumn colour, this ancient woodland comes alive at this time of year. It’s a nature reserve and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) so there’s plenty to spot beyond the autumnal colour (you might catch jays burying acorns for winter). On a sunny day, it’s worth driving to nearby Colwick Country Park (pictured) for a stomp and a few photos too. The two beautiful lakes reflect the autumn glory to perfection. Snap away. <a href="https://quayside-cafe.co.uk/">Quayside Café</a> is a cosy, woodland-inspired café that dishes up brilliant breakfasts. Fuel up here first.</p>

<p>Park in the village or at the National Trust car park and walk past the Italiente garden and down to the river for a riverside walk through ancient fiery forests. The National Trust café sells stonkingly-good scones, but you can’t beat nearby Wildhive <a href="https://www.wildhive.uk/">Callow Hall</a> for a full-blown afternoon tea if you feel like making a special day of it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sherwood-forest-edwinstowe"><a href="https://www.visitsherwood.co.uk/explore-the-forest/walks-and-trails/">Sherwood Forest</a>, Edwinstowe</h2>



<p>For the quintessential Sherwood Forest experience, take one of the trails that passes the iconic Major Oak. Glorious in autumn as its 28m canopy turns from yellow to orange, you’ll also pass some of the Major Oak’s ancient neighbours (with&nbsp;Robin’s famous hiding place being a 15-20 minute walk from the visitor centre). Kick back with a cuppa and cake afterwards from the <a href="https://www.visitsherwood.co.uk/at-the-visitor-centre/the-cafe/">Sherwood Forest Café</a> – the views are stunning.</p>

<p>Pretty Padley Gorge meanders through photogenic ancient woodland past tumbling waterfalls and gently flowing streams. The woodland section if you park at Grindleford is breath-takingly beautiful in the autumn. Warm up afterwards at&nbsp;<a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/maynard-grindleford-derbyshire/">The Maynard</a>, a stone’s throw from Grindleford train station. It’s an easy place to stumble to on finishing your leaf-kicking stomp and the newly revamped restaurant is excellent if you’ve worked up an appetite.</p>

<p>The woodlands here are really showing off their colours right now and the 5km ‘<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/peak-district-derbyshire/kedleston-hall/kedleston---long-walk">long walk’</a> is full of fiery autumn colour and interesting autumnal fungi. Brilliant <a href="https://nottsderbyshire.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/binary-bar-restaurant-mickleover-derbyshire/">Binary Bar &amp; Restaurant</a> is in nearby Mickleover. Drop by for brunch and fuel up before your walk.</p>

<p>When you’ve had your culture fix in the courtyard galleries, go through the gate next to The Harley Gallery and follow the Harley Aart Trail signs. Weaving its way along a pretty stream near the hamlet of Belph, this gorgeous walk is at its best in autumn when the trees show off their fiery foliage. Stop off at the <a href="https://www.welbeck.co.uk/experience/visit/the-harley-caf%C3%A9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harley Café</a> on your return and warm up with a latté.</p>
