The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa, Yorkshire

Set in 30,000 acres of glorious rolling countryside at the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, this country house hideaway is the perfect place to escape (and indulge your Heathcliff fantasies).

Pack the Hunter wellies, a copy of Wuthering Heights and the dogs baby. It’s all about the stunning countryside at this heavenly, high-end, traditional (and very dog-friendly) hotel.

Perfectly perched at the heart of the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa is surrounded by more than 80 miles of woodland walks that meander across spectacular countryside and past the atmospheric 12th-century Augustinian monastery.

With the Dales as its backdrop, the hotel stands in landscaped grounds arranged around an immaculate, formal Italian garden and houses 40 stylish, luxury bedrooms and two award-winning restaurants. After a day skipping over stiles and roaming through what’s (deservedly) dubbed ‘God’s own country’, it’s a joy to retreat to the elegant but cosy rooms of the hotel and play lady of the manor. Speaking of which, the Duchess herself selected many of the elegant furnishings and antiques which give such country-house style to the hotel. And the artwork? Handpicked from Chatsworth’s Devonshire Collection – one of the finest private art collections in Europe, don’t you know.

A beautiful bijou barn conversion next to the hotel houses the spa, with four generously-sized therapy rooms, indoor swimming pool, plus a relaxation space and lounge with views (did I mention the jaw-dropping views?) over the gorgeous countryside.

Post-spa, you can float across to the Burlington Restaurant (there’s also the less formal, more modern, bright and breezy Brasserie). The Burlington however is something special. It has 3 AA rosettes and, if you like farm-to-table, low-food-mile seasonal eating, this is the place for you. Head chef Chris O’Callaghan prides himself on using home-grown fruit and vegetables from the hotel’s kitchen garden and produce reared and caught on the Estate. More concerned about what you’ll quaff? We hear you. There’s an award-winning wine list which the head sommelier will help match to each dish on the menu.

Fine dining at its best, Wuthering Heights-inspired walks and impeccable hospitality. What more could a girl ask for, eh?
