Muddy loves a room with a view and the big Peak District vistas don’t come much better than those from The Cavendish. Owned by and overlooking the Chatsworth Estate, it’s perfectly placed for lovely walks from the doorstep and the gorgeous garden room and terrace is a brilliant addition, really making the most of those glorious countryside views. It’s been done well, with natural interior touches celebrating a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Perfect for family summer al fresco gatherings.
If it’s fine dining you’re after, the newly refurbished three AA Rosette Gallery Restaurant is the place. It serves excellent, vibrant, locally-sourced food (with fruits, vegetables and herbs from the Chatsworth kitchen garden) in a comfortable, contemporary country house dining room.
The easy elegant interiors, newly spruced up and overseen by the Duchess of Devonshire, continue throughout the hotel. There’s fine art from the family collection on the walls and antique furniture rubbing alongside comfy, contemporary sofas and modern muted colour palettes. Bedrooms are a mix of period furniture, rich fabrics and luxurious bathrooms. It’s elegant yet relaxed, and thoroughly grown-up.
There’s also a Coach House, which you can book as a whole house for groups of up to eight, or just individual rooms (it includes two fully accessible ground floor rooms).
The best bit? There’s a summer ‘three for two’ offer on at the moment for stays between Sunday and Thursday. Book two nights and you’ll get an extra night free (and yes, that includes a lovely, locally-sourced breakfast).
As with all the Devonshire hotels, dogs are welcomed – but you’ll need to book ahead. There are only a small number of dog-friendly bedrooms and resident dogs can accompany you in the Garden Restaurant and on the terrace.
