Peak Edge Hotel, Peak District

Heading for the hills? This 18th-century inn with swish sandstone extension and contemporary country styling makes for a cosy, comfortable treat of a place to stay.

If you’re looking for a boutique Peak District bolthole that’s as much mod cons and comfort as it is traditional and cosy, stick this one at the top of your list. The four-star Peak Edge has the best of both worlds.

The original pub is packed with character but has had a modern interior makeover – stone walls, flagstone floors and open fires. The modern hotel wing (all slate and sandstone) has been done well and complements the original old coaching inn. It also means there are some bright, airy and very accessible bedrooms.

The popular two AA rosette Red Lion restaurant is a great spot to head back to after a day stomping the hills. Think rustic chic, with cosy dining booths, chunky oak beams and big leather armchairs. Food is locally-sourced (much of it coming from owner Steve Perez’s farm less than a mile down the road).

Fantastic location to boot. As you’d expect, it’s perched on the eastern edge of the Peak district. Nestled in a lovely landscaped lakeside peppered with young woodland trees, it’s only a 15 minute drive west through prime Peak countryside to Chatsworth. Yes, it’s next to a main road but that makes for easy access (the M1 is an easy 12 miles away and Chesterfield 10 minutes’ drive to the east).
