Buxton Crescent Heritage Experience

Discover the secrets of one of the UK’s most famous spa towns in Derbyshire and get a unique, behind-the-scenes peek at its architectural splendour.

For decades, pleasure seekers and history buffs have flocked to Buxton in the heart of the Peak District to be wowed by its incredible architecture and rich history. Standing dominate in the town centre is the glorious Crescent Hotel – a true masterpiece of Georgian design that rivals its more famous spa town sisters down south.

Built by the fifth Duke of Devonshire in 1789, the Crescent was the epicentre of Buxton life, and regal visitors flocked to the town to take its health-inducing thermal mineral waters. Though many know Buxton by this famous period of its history, did you know that the Romans first discovered its thermal springs and named it Aquae Arnemetiae as a result?

The Buxton Crescent Heritage Experience has captured fascinating facts, eye-opening stories and local tales that reveal the true depth of this special spa town in a unique, interactive exhibition. Join expert guides as they take you through the untold history of Buxton, and encounter visitors from a period spanning more than 10,000 years. Or wander at your own pace to follow in the footsteps of dukes and duchesses.

The exhibition is based inside the Grade I-listed beauty of the Crescent (ask to take a peek in the stunning Assembly Room) so you’ll get a first-hand look at what the Georgians fell in love with back in the 18th-century.

Perfect for families and history lovers alike, little ones will be entertained throughout while big kids can dig deeper into some of the more interesting elements of the town’s history. To finish, grab a drink of the famous thermal mineral water straight from its source, and bottle some to take home from the fabulous Pump Room.

Open seven days a week, the 90-minute premium tours with a guide start at 10.30 and 11.00am with general access from 1pm. The Pump Room also hosts year-round events of music, talks and performances.
