<p>Crowned Nottinghamshire&#8217;s best&nbsp;pub in the 2023 National Pub &amp; Bar Awards this dog-friendly country pub is deservedly building up a great reputation. Just a stone’s throw from Nottingham (well, an easy 20-minute drive anyway) it offers a big menu of street style tapas, stone-baked pizza and seasonal specials, sitting alongside pub classics to please all the family, this contemporary, buzzy pub opens up to offer some of the nicest outdoor dining spaces in the county.</p>



<p>With four funky new dining domes and a big renovation of the party space on the cards, Muddy booked in to discover if it lives up to the hype.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>Unfussy, foodie and fun. This is a place that welcomes you with open arms whether you’re popping in for a pint after a muddy dog walk or treating friends and family to a three-course celebration meal. Along with a well-appointed bar, restaurant, and private dining room (think leather seats, velvet cushions and oak tables), the pub has invested in outdoor spaces that create a buzzing, holiday vibe for dining al fresco.</p>



<p>Outside there’s semi-covered wooden veranda and terrace with long trestle tables surrounded by tropical planting. British weather doing its usual thing? Book one of four twinkly dome dining tents (the latest addition being a whopping 14 seater) or style it out in the teepee with outdoor bar and rattan seating at the bottom of the garden. Live bands take to the stage here on Friday nights and sometimes the teepee transforms into an outdoor cinema or covered  bar with heaters on chilly evenings, giving it an après-ski vibe.</p>

<p>For those looking to add to the &#8216;gram, there are pretty flower arches, a giant  giraffe and dog-friendly water barrels in the garden.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Planning a party or celebration? Ye Olde Bridge Inn should be right up there on your list. There’s a whole stack of spaces for private events: a private dining room for up to 14; bubble-style dining domes; and the quirky Stables Barn for between 20-40 guests. There’s a big renovation planned &nbsp;and, come Spring 2024, it will be able to host big groups of 40-80 with floor-to-ceiling glass and a new bar.</p>

<p>The ultimate test – midweek lunch. Any pub has to be top notch to pull the crowds midweek. Things started off well, having enjoyed our 25min drive north from Nottingham through pretty rolling countryside, we swung into the car park to find it full. Once seated in our Dome Dining tent, we were given a bluetooth speaker to craft our own music vibe and a personal call button when we were ready to be served. So impressed.</p>

<p>For starters, who can pass go without ordering the tapas small plates? Miso Fried Chicken, Honey Chorizo Con Judiones and Crispy Chilli Cauliflower. The Chorizo was a heart-warming taste explosion and the Crispy Cauliflower was super perky draped with chilli and served in a delicious sticky sauce.</p>



<p>For mains, despite being tempted by specials like 28-day matured Picanta Steak, Tortilla Towers or Halloumi Khobez Flatbreads, I polished my Muddy halo and chose a healthy Fajita Salad Bowl with siracha sour cream, guacamole, chopped salad and fired pita with succulent pulled pork. Colourful, deliciously fresh and bursting with flavour – mwoah!</p>

<p>It was great to see that the pub offered full vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus – all nicely presented online so you don’t feel your dietary requirements are just an afterthought. The most popular picks here at weekends are the Njuda Chorizo stone-baked pizzas and Sunday roasts , along with pub classics like Oxton sausage and the cheese stack burger.</p>



<p>We didn’t have room for dessert, but the menu was drool-worthy (from apple and sticky toffee bakes to crêpes, American pancakes and warmed cooked dough).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID-FRIENDLY?</h2>

<p>Littlies will love it here. There’s a fab play area within watching distance of the terrace or teepee and a zappable QR code drinks menu means you can order online while the kids run around and everything will come to you. There’s a Little People menu of crowd-pleasing mini cheese burgers, chicken goujons and mini tomato pizzas (yes, they’re happy to host kids’ parties too). The waffle and ice cream and mini donuts went down a storm on our neighbouring table!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-out-about">OUT &amp; ABOUT</h2>



<p>Lots of lovely walk options in this neck of the woods, but one of the best is around <a href="https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/gunthorpe" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gunthorpe Lock</a>. Gorgeous views of the River Trent and lots of river boats to have a nose at whilst you plod along the river.&nbsp;Or tie in a trip to <a href="https://www.papplewickpumpingstation.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Papplewick Pumping Station</a>, a 10 minute drive away in a simply stunning spot, and one of the finest working pumping stations in the country (it hosts a fab Christmas market). </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:&nbsp;</strong> Great for group nights out, laid-back date nights or a family lunch. The chilled vibe, fab food and lovely outdoor spaces make it a solid destination for families.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong>&nbsp;Formal foodies looking for starched tablecloths and hawkish waiting staff. It’s an unfussy gastropub &#8211; and we’re here for it.</p>

<p>Very good for seasonal grub of this quality. Small plates/tapas from £7,50, pizzas £14.95, mains £17-ish, puds £8-ish, kids’ meals all £7.95.</p>
