If you’re in need of a proper countryside escape, head to the rural village of Dalbury Lees to find The Cow. This super cute inn has all the hallmarks of a proper British retreat – roaring fires, exposed beams and eccentric artwork. But there’s the added bonus of some wonderful, luxury twists.
Each of the 12 boutique rooms are have modern English accents and shabby chic styling. And though each has its own individual flavour, there are the same indulgent touches throughout. Sink into a locally made premium mattress and Egyptian cotton bedding. Or wrap up in a snuggly bathrobe after a long shower with Molton Brown toiletries. Complimentary breakfast is as standard and pooches are welcome in the ground floor rooms. (Perfect if you’re off for a weekend stomp around the Peaks).
Derbyshire is well and truly landlocked, yet The Cow has recently opened a fantastic seafood restaurant that’s making culinary waves. Head chef Nathan Senior is a true Cornishman. He’s set up supplies from Newlyn, Looe, Mevagissey and other Cornish ports. This means fresh fish is landed on the day, packed on ice and delivered to The Cow the following morning. And if seafood doesn’t tickle your fancy, there’s prime Derbyshire beef and plenty of seasonal vegan and vegetarian options.
The Cow is a stone’s throw from lovely Ashbourne for loads of indies and bars to explore, and just a hop to the city of Derby. If you’re using the inn as a base for exploring, the breathtaking beauty of the Peak District is 20 minutes away in the car. Be sure to visit Thor’s Cave and the stepping stones at Dovedale.
As well as seasonal offerings, The Cow also has its popular Snuggle Sundays package which includes a stay for two guests, a £30 restaurant voucher, two complimentary breakfasts, a welcome bottle of wine and nibbles in room on arrival, and late check out all for £150. Gorgeous.
